The Guidance
and Counselling program at Westwood High School includes academic, vocational,
personal and referral elements.
Individual appointments are available upon request with the school counsellor.
The student is assured of confidential and serious consideration. A small
sampling of concerns dealt with include: peer and parent relationships, coping
with stress, or help in making personal decisions.
The counsellor acts as liaison between the student, the board’s Students
Services, and community agencies. This would include referral to social workers,
psychologists, psychiatrists, psychometricians, Y.M.C.A. programs, Youth
Division and other health and mental health workers.
All of us have things we need to talk about, and discussing them with a
counsellor is helpful to most people. Generally, students see counsellors to
discuss something to do with school, but others come in to talk about other
things such as their family, their friends or themselves. Generally talking with
a counsellor is CONFIDENTIAL. However, there are some limitations to this code.
Here are some concerns that a
counsellor might hear:
• My teacher and I aren’t getting along.
• Do you think I’m taking the right courses for what I want to do?
• I don’t have any friends.
• I’m always fighting with my parents.
• I think I’m pregnant.
• I want to change a course.
Students may make an appointment with our counsellor. If an urgent matter arises
and the counsellor is not available, you may contact an Administrator.
